Have you ever offered your opinion to a friend or colleague, only to notice that they didn’t act on your advice?

The stark reality is that while we believe it’s our advice that others should act upon, it’s our behavioursthat really get their attention.

“The world is changed by your example, not your opinion.”

(Paulo Coelho)

It’s been proven that our behaviours and actions – known as behavioural identity – have much greater influence than our words.

Behavioural identity refers to the extent to which you identify with a particular behaviour or set of behaviours.

Key Aspects of Behavioural Identity.

  • Self-Perception:

How do you see yourself in relation to specific actions? When you identify as a ‘healthy person’ you are more likely to engage in ‘healthy’ behaviours.

  • Influence on Behaviour:

Your self-perception directly influences future behaviour. When you identify with a certain behaviour, you are more likely to repeat it and avoid contradictory behaviours.

  • Development:

Behavioural identity can be shaped by repeated performance of a chosen behaviour. This suggests that, with conscious effort, we can shift/change our behavioural identity.

  • Resilience:

A strong behavioural identity provides resilience against setbacks. Individuals who identify with a certain behaviour can perceive lapses in that behaviour (or performance) as temporary and not reflective of their true identity.

As old as the adage may be, the “it’s not what you say, it’s what you do”, has its roots in the foundations of behavioural identity.

Therefore, for those who are hoping to influence, persuade, coach, or mentor others at some stage of their career/life, it’s super important to remember to strive to be the best example of what you are hoping to instil in others.
