In most people the phrase, “Can I offer you some feedback?” triggers a similar response to hearing fast footsteps behind you at night.
(Dr David Rock)
Sometimes we can ‘care too much’ by overly empathising with a colleague who is facing a work-related challenge that is well within their realm of responsibilities and competencies.
On the flip side, we can lean toward the obnoxious, by broadcasting to someone (and those within earshot) that they are underperforming in their role.
While the rise of attention to Psychological Safety has alleviated the discomfort of many toxic workplaces, there can be other forces at play which are similarly detrimental to the performance and development of individuals and teams.
Radical Candor is a contemporary communication framework for providing feedback to individuals.
Developed by Kim Scott in her book “Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity,”the concept gives leaders a method for providing direct, honest feedback while also showing genuine care for their team members.
Radical Candor involves finding a balance between being both challenging and caring in your communication and striving to create an environment where open and honest feedback can thrive.

Sometimes referred to as ‘The Critical Friend’, practicing Radical Candor can help to develop trust and safety amongst leaders or managers and their team.
